Clothing warehouse fire in Demra doused after 12 hrs
The amount of damage can be ascertained after investigation, Fire Service official says
A massive fire broke out at a warehouse filled with clothes at Bhanga Press area of Demra in Dhaka late Thursday night and was doused after 12 hours.
Fire service officials said the fire service was first informed of the fire at around 11:30pm on Thursday. The first unit arrived at the spot at 11:45pm.
At least 10 units of fire service from Demra, Postogola and Siddique Bazar brought the fire under control around 8am and doused the fire around 11:50am, said Shahjahan Sikder, deputy assistant director of Fire service and Civil Defence (media cell).
Members of the Bangladesh Navy also joined to bring the fire under control, according to a statement of the Inter Services Public Relation Directorate.
On Friday morning, Fire Service and Civil Defence Director (Training, Planning and Development) and Incident Commander Lt Col Md Rezaul Karim visited the spot and said the amount of damage can be ascertained after investigation, reports UNB.
The affected building and buildings next to it don't have even an inch of gap between them. The firemen faced difficulty entering the building because of the narrow staircase. Water from drains had to be used to control the fire as there were not enough water supplies nearby, he added.
"We are yet to get a hold of the building owner," said the official.
