Fire damaged nearly 200 rooms on 4 floors of secretariat building: PWD official
The damaged floors of building 7 can be repaired and made usable again, says the official
The 26 December fire damaged at least 200 rooms across the four floors of the secretariat's building 7, said Public Works Department (PWD) Deputy Assistant Engineer Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said today (30 December).
"There are 40 to 50 rooms on each of the floors which suffered the most damage. Some are completely damaged while some are partially damaged," he said while talking to reporters at the secretariat premises this afternoon.
Responding to queries, Mannan said it is possible to repair the building and make it usable again.
"Many high-level expert teams are investigating. Their opinions will determine the next course of action," he added. "But initially, it looks like the building can be repaired. Rest can be said after getting the investigation report."
Mannan also said PWD officials have been present at the scene since the day of the incident and have extended all possible cooperation to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Mentioning that the law enforcement agencies have not yet handed over the building to the PWD, he said it will be clear how long it will take to repair the building after getting the assessment report on damages.
In the early hours of 26 December, the fire broke out on four floors – six, seven, eight, and nine – of building 7 at 1:52am. Firefighters managed to fully douse the flames after nearly 10 hours.
While no casualties were reported from the fire itself, Shoyanur Jaman Noyon, a firefighter from Tejgaon fire station, was killed in the line of duty.
