First convocation of JnU on Saturday
A total of 18,317 graduates have registered
The 1st convocation of the Jagannath University (JnU) will be held on Saturday.
President Abdul Hamid, also chancellor of the university, will preside over the event at Dhupkhola ground in the capital.
Professor Emeritus Dr Arun Kumar Basak of Rajshahi University will attend the programme as the convocation speaker.
A total of 18,317 graduates have registered for the convocation. Among them, some 11,877 students are to receive their graduation certificates, along with 4,829 postgraduates, 11 masters of philosophy and six doctorates.
Apart from them, 1,574 students of evening programmes will receive their certificates.
Meanwhile, the JnU authority has completed all the preparation to hold the convocation in a befitting and festive manner.
The academic and administrative buildings of the university have been decorated in a flamboyant manner.
Most of the graduates have already collected their costumes, bags and gifts from offices of their respective departments.
Before the convocation day, the graduates clad in ceremonial gowns roamed around the campus.
Md Hasnain, who earned his master's degree from the Islamic History and Culture Department of the university, told The Business Standard, "I have been waiting for receiving my certificate in a convocation ceremony. The convocation has created the chance to meet with my classmates, friends, seniors and juniors. I am eagerly waiting to see them," he said.
The JnU started awarding bachelor's degree from 2009.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Professor Mizanur Rahman said due to various complications the convocation could not be arranged earlier.
"We'll make it a successful convocation with the assistance of teachers and students."
