First woman DG of JATI, Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana
Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana joined the Judiciary on 20 December 1975 as the first woman judge of the country
Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana, a retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, is to be the first woman Director General (DG) of the Judicial Administration Training Institute (JATI).
Her appointment was confirmed on a government circular issued by the Law and Justice Department of the Law Ministry on Wednesday.
Signed by Law and Justice Secretary, Mohammad Golam Sarwar, the circular stated that the government has appointed Retd Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana as the Director General of the Judicial Administration Training Institute for a 2 year tenure, by the powers conferred under Section 11 (2) of the Judicial Administration Training Institute Act, 1995.
She will succeed Justice Khandaker Musa Khaled whose contract is to end on May 20.
While in office as the institute's director general, Justice Nazmun Ara will be entitled to the pension and allowances she received as a Retd judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Justice Nazmun Ara Sultana joined the Judiciary on 20 December 1975 as the first woman judge of the country and was gradually promoted to District Judge. In the year 2000, she was appointed as the first woman judge of the High Court Division.
In 2011, she was appointed as the first woman judge of the Appellate Division.
She retired from service on July 6, 2016.
