Former state minister Zahid Faruk sent to jail
Judge Nurul Amin of Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order after rejecting Zahid Faruk’s bail petition
A Barishal court today (23 September) sent former state minister for water resources Zahid Faruk Shamim to jail in a case filed over arson attacks in Barishal district and city BNP offices.
Judge Nurul Amin of Barishal Metropolitan Magistrate's Court passed the order after rejecting Zahid Faruk's bail petition.
Afzalul Karim, vice president of Barishal Metropolitan Awami League and Zahid Faruk's lawyer, told TBS that they sought bail for the former state minister, citing his heart condition and the need for hospital treatment.
The court responded by stating that he [Zahid] would receive appropriate care according to the jail code.
On 4 August, the district and metropolitan BNP offices were vandalised, attacked and set on fire in Barishal.
On 23 August, Metropolitan BNP convener Moniruzzaman Khan Farooq filed a case with Kotwali Model Police Station accusing Faruk and 700 others for the attacks.
Zahid Faruk was arrested from the capital's Baridhara area last (22 September) evening.
