Proposal for separate judicial secretariat to be sent to law ministry soon: Chief justice
He emphasised that if lawyers fail to uphold proper ethical standards in the legal profession, the hard-won gains from the mass uprising could be jeopardised
Proposal for the formation of a separate judicial secretariat will be submitted to the law ministry soon, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed said today (29 September).
Earlier on 21 September, the chief justice announced plans to establish a separate secretariat to ensure the independence of the judiciary.
"The most helpless people of our society turn to the courts to seek justice and assert their rights. Lawyers have a moral duty to offer legal services to these individuals, and we must all approach this responsibility with compassion and humanity," he said while speaking at a reception programme at Faridpur Bar Association.
He advised lawyers not to pursue law solely for making a living.
"True value as a lawyer comes from viewing the profession as a means to uphold rights and promote welfare," he said.
The chief justice reminded the lawyers that the court exists to safeguard human rights, a principle enshrined in the country's constitution.
He emphasised that if lawyers fail to uphold proper ethical standards in the legal profession, the hard-won gains from the mass uprising could be jeopardised.
Faridpur District Bar Association President Advocate Md Abdul Quader Mia presided over the event and General Secretary Advocate Zahid Bepari moderated the session.
Among others, District and Sessions Judge Md Zia Haider, Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamrul Hasan Molya, Superintendent of Police Md Abdul Jalil PPM (Service), Faridpur District BNP convener and senior lawyer Advocate Shahjahan, Syed Modarres Ali Ichha, and Advocate Subal Chandra Saha were also present.
