Garment workers block road in Ctg's Bayezid Bostami area demanding wages
Workers of a garment factory in Chattogram's Bayezid Bostami police station area have been staging a protest, blocking the road since today (3 February) morning.
Traffic movement on the Bayezid-Gate No. 2 Road has remained suspended for over two hours, causing suffering for commuters. Law enforcement agencies, including the Bangladesh Army, are on the spot, trying to control the situation.
Confirming the incident, Faisal Ahmed, Deputy Commissioner (South) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, told The Business Standard that about 500 workers of Anwar Garments blocked the road at the Technical intersection of Bayezid Bostami Road around 10am.
"The workers are demanding the payment of wages for December and January. Members of law enforcement agencies, including the Bangladesh Army, Industrial Police, and CMP, are on the spot, and we are trying to convince the workers to clear the road," he added.
"The owner of the garment factory has already arrived and agreed to pay the due wages by today. Hopefully, the workers will leave the road soon," he further stated.
Protesting workers alleged that the factory authorities delay wage payments every month, making it difficult for them to manage household expenses, especially as commodity prices continue to rise.
