Garment workers block road in Kuril demanding arrears
A group of garment workers staged a protest blocking Kuril Bishwa Road area demanding payment of their arrears this evening (30 January).
Zia Rahman Ziko, additional deputy commissioner (traffic) of Gulshan zone told The Business Standard that about 100-150 workers of Waymart Apparels have blocked the Jomoj road area of Kuril around 10pm, halting traffic movement.
Traffic across the city has been in dire straits throughout the day as students of Government Titumir College staged a road blockade in front of their Mohakhali campus, demanding university status, among six other demands.
Frustrated commuters took to social media to share their experiences of being stranded on the road.
Easadi Newaz reported being stuck on Banani Road 11 for an hour at 7pm in the Traffic Alert group.
Nadim Zawad Akil recounted walking 5 kilometres from Bangladesh Army Stadium to Gulshan Gudaraghat due to standstill traffic.
Another commuter, Akash Sheikh, also reported being stuck in Banani for 2.5 hours at 8:53pm.
Despite leaving for home at 6:30pm, HH Tandra wrote that she remained stranded on the road as of 10:41pm.
"There has been a massive gridlock on the Moghbazar Flyover, as well as nearby areas since this evening. Vehicles have been on a standstill as of 10:17pm," said Nilima Faris, local resident.
