Ghost of dictatorship ingrained in administration: Mirza Fakhrul
“These ghosts must be banished, or the interim government will not be able to do anything.”
The "ghost of dictatorship" remains ingrained in the administration, said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, adding that any efforts by the interim government will fail unless these remnants are removed.
Speaking at a teachers' gathering organised by the Teachers-Employees Oikkyojote in Dhaka yesterday, the BNP secretary general stressed that corruption and oppression have taken root within the administration, and these must be purged for progress to be made.
"These ghosts who have been oppressing the people for so long, who have committed corruption and looting, are still in the administration," Fakhrul said at the event held at the Institution of Engineers' auditorium, marking World Teachers' Day.
"These ghosts must be banished, or the interim government will not be able to do anything."
Fakhrul expressed support for the interim government, stating that it had been entrusted with leading the country under the guidance of Muhammad Yunus.
He acknowledged that time had been given to the interim government but stressed that this period must not be indefinite. Fakhrul also reaffirmed BNP's commitment to democracy and warned against any return to depoliticisation or extremism.
"We do not want to see minus two politics, radicalisation, militancy, or terrorism again. We want to see a healthy liberal democratic system in the country," he said.
Addressing the issue of teacher nationalisation, Fakhrul said that while nationalising jobs may offer solutions, it is not a comprehensive fix for the education system's problems.
"Nationalisation alone will not solve all your problems. The quality of education must be improved, and qualified people should be brought in," he said.
However, he cautioned against blind allegiance to party politics, particularly among educators.
"Teachers should not be blindly aligned with party politics. If we continue down this path, educational institutions will suffer," Fakhrul warned, urging a depoliticised and healthy environment in schools and universities.
