The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief will give financial assistance to over 1 crore households ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the Mujib Borsho, the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme, Tk450, equivalent to the price of 10kgs of rice, will be given to each household.
Md Mohsin, secretary to the ministry, told The Business Standard, "To make the Eid festival joyful among the country's marginalised community, the financial aid will be distributed among over 1 crore households in the Mujib Borsho; it is a big initiative."
"More than Tk450 crore has already been allocated to implement the programme. The aid will bring smiles in the face of the beneficiaries at this pandemic time," he added.
According to a press statement issued by the ministry on Wednesday, a total of Tk450.44 crore has been allocated from the ministry's own budget to assist the beneficiaries.
The families recently affected by natural disasters and those who are distressed and extremely poor will get priorities to avail of this assistance, the ministry said.
The aid will help increase the purchasing capacity of its beneficiaries, it added.
