Grameenphone to stand beside 100,000 flood-affected families
Relief materials have already been distributed among 25,000 families in Jamalpur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Shariatpur and Kurigram
Private mobile network operator Grameenphone will provide relief goods to 100,000 families in the most flood-affected districts across Bangladesh.
The company has partnered with the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to distribute the assistance among the flood victims.
Grameenphone made the announcement at a programme titled "Extend support towards flood victims"on Wednesday.
Dr Md Enamur Rahman, state minister for disaster management and relief; Prof Dr Md Habibe Millat, vice chairman of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Yasir Azman, chief executive officer of Grameenphone Ltd, were present at the programme.
Each relief pack contains rice, sugar, salt, lentil and semolina, which is expected to support a four-person family's basic needs for a week.
Relief packs have already been distributed among 25,000 families in Jamalpur, Tangail, Sirajganj, Shariatpur and Kurigram, Grmeenphone said.
The relief distribution efforts are expected to be completed by September 20, it added.
State minister Dr Md Enamur Rahman said, "We appreciate the flood relief initiative undertaken by Grameenphone, and encourage others in the private sector to come forward too as Bangladesh is facing an unprecedented challenge this year due to the current flood on top of the Covid-19 situation."
Prof Dr Md Habibe Millat said, "It's a very challenging time and we have to stand beside people affected in flood. We appreciate the gesture of Grameenphone for stepping forward and helping out the affected population."
Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman said, "As a responsible member of the community we serve, Grameenphone must step forward and help the victims along with the government."
Grameenphone's Covid-19 response activities were undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, Directorate General of Health Services, a2i, BRAC, and Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission, World Health Organization, UNICEF, UNDP, ICT Division, and other industry partners.
