‘Gunfights’ kills 1, injures 12 Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar
Two guns and four fresh rounds of cartridges were recovered from the scene
One person was killed and 12 injured in separate gunfights in Rohingya camp in Teknaf of Cox's Bazar yesterday.
Hours after a group of yaba traders surrendered to police on Monday, a gun battle started among two groups of two Rohingya bandits over extortion and hundi, an illegal means of fund transfer.
On information of the gunfight, a team of Rapid Action battalion (RAB) raided the camp to arrest the criminals.
"During the raid, the bandits opened gunshots on the elite force team, forcing RAB to retaliate that triggered as gunfight," claimed Mirza Shaheed Mahtab, company commander of RAB-15 Teknaf camp.
12 bandits were injured in the alleged gun battle and one of them was declared dead at Teknaf Hospital. The injured are being treated at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital and Gonoshasthaya Clinic.
The deceased bandit was identified as Iliyas, 40. He was a resident of Teknaf-26 Rohingya camp.
Three members of the RAB team were also injured. Two guns and four fresh rounds of cartridges were recovered from the scene, Mirza Shaheed Mahtab added.
Earlier on the day, hundi and yaba traders submitted 21,000 yaba tablets, 10 firearms and 30 fresh rounds of cartridges during a surrender programme organised by district administration.
