Central Coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, early today (8 February) visited students injured in an attack by locals in Gazipur last night (7 February).
The incident stemmed from the vandalism of the residence of former Liberation War Affairs minister AKM Mozammel Haque in the Dhirashram area of Gazipur. Around 9:30pm, 15 students were injured when locals carried out an attack.
Upon receiving the news, police and army personnel arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. The injured students were taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam visited the hospital at around 3:30am today to check on the injured students and inquire about their treatment.
The injured students claimed that they had been informed that Mozammel Haque's house was under attack and that some students were being held hostage inside.
They said they were asked to intervene, but upon arrival, they were subjected to what they described as a "pre-planned attack" by Awami League supporters, leaving 15 of them seriously injured.
Gazipur Coordinator Abdullah Mohit alleged that members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League were responsible for the attack.
According to him, miscreants had attempted to loot Mozammel Haque's house, and when activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement tried to stop them, they were attacked following an announcement made over a loudspeaker.
This morning, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Nafisa Arifin and Additional District Magistrate Salma Akhter visited the injured students at the hospital. They assured them of full cooperation in their treatment.
Gazipur Sadar Metro Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Arifur Rahman stated that at least 15 people were injured in an attack by locals after they had attempted to vandalise the house of former minister Mozammel Haque.
He added that police and army personnel brought the situation under control, and an investigation is ongoing.
