BMA gives 24-hour ultimatum to free Dr Mamun
The association has threatened to strengthen its movement if its demand for the unconditional release of Dr Mamun is not met within the next 24 hours
The Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) – the professional body of medical doctors – on Sunday gave the government a 24-hour ultimatum to free Dr Abdullah Al Mamun, registrar of National Mental Health Institute and Hospital (NIMH).
The association also threatened to strengthen its movement, from the next day, if its demand for the unconditional release of Dr Mamun is not met within the next 24 hours.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting held at BMA's central office on Sunday, read a press release of BMA.

According to the press release, BMA President Dr Mustafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Secretary General Dr Ehteshamul Huq expressed their grave concern over the illogical arrest of the National Mental Health Institute and Hospital registrar.
Mamun was arrested at his official residence on 17 November in a case over the death of senior ASP Anisul Karim at a private mental health centre in Dhaka.
On 9 November, senior ASP Anisul was beaten to death by the staff of Mind Aid Hospital in the capital's Adabor area. The victim's father Foyez Uddin filed a case the next day.
Since then, mental disease specialists have been observing various programmes, including work abstentions, demanding the release of Dr Mamun.
