Ijtema clashes: Police ban gatherings in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10 and near Turag River
The move comes following clashes between the followers of Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Zubayer Ahmed and supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi of India over occupying the Bishwa Ijtema field in Tongi, Gazipur, which left at least two dead and hundreds injured
Dhaka and Gazipur police have banned any kind of gathering, procession, demonstration, etc. in Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector-10 and the adjacent South and West of the Turag River in the capital until further notice.
The move comes following clashes between the followers of Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Zubayer Ahmed and supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi of India over occupying the Bishwa Ijtema field in Tongi, Gazipur, which left at least two dead and hundreds injured.
Police also barred the public from entering the Ijtema grounds until further notice.
In the wake of the deadly clash Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury earlier on the day convened an emergency meeting with all parties concerned.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dr Nazmul Karim Khan issued the order in a notice this afternoon, confirmed Deputy Police Commissioner (Crime-South) NM Nasir Uddin.
Also, no more than two people would be allowed to gather together within 3km area surrounding the Ijtema field.
The notice also said, action will be taken against anyone carrying any weapons, knives, sticks, explosives or any other such material.
Also, no loud noise shall be made through any loudspeaker or any other such device.
Earlier in the day, two people were killed and hundreds injured in a bloody clash between the followers of Tablighi Jamaat's Maulana Zubayer Ahmed and supporters of Maulana Saad Kandhalvi of India over occupying the Bishwa Ijtema field in Tongi, Gazipur.
The incident took place around 3am today (18 December), confirmed Deputy Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police Altutmish.
Clashes also ensued at the Ijtema grounds today as well as Dhaka Medical College premises where the injured were taken for treatment.
Later, police, BGB and RAB have strengthened security in the Kakrail Mosque and Dhaka Medical College Hospital areas following the clash between two parties over the occupation of the Ijtema field in Tongi.
