Improve or face close down: Industries Minister to tanneries

Stern action will be taken against tanneries if they produce excessive chromium radiation beyond the standard set by Leather Working Group (LWG), warned Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun on Wednesday.

Tanneries will be given time for controlling the level of chromium radiation, he said, adding that: "They'll be shut down if they fail to achieve the desired standard."
According to a report in February, only seven tanneries out of 130 were producing standard level of radiation and nine others were improving very slowly, he said, ordering all tanneries to take quick measures.
The meeting also directed to send the recommendations for resolving the existing problems of tanneries in Savar industrial area to the ministry within March 18.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Advisor Salman F Rahman, State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumdar were also present at the meeting.
