Four major cities to bury overhead power cables
Work to this end is set to begin in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi and Gulshan
Within the next five years, power distribution lines in all of Bangladesh's major cities will be buried, said Nasrul Hamid, state minister of Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
He stated this while speaking at the contract signing ceremony between the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and Energytron, the research and development wing of the Australian Knowledge Integration Services, at Bidyut Bhaban in the capital this morning.
BPDB inked the contract with Energytron to conduct a feasibility study for work on an underground cable distribution network within its distribution system across four big cities – including Chattogram, Cumilla, Sylhet, and Mymensingh.

Saiful Islam Azad, secretary of the BPDB and Wahidul Islam, chief engineer of Energytron signed the contract on behalf of their respective entities.
As part of the contract, the Australian company will also prepare a detailed report on the design and project. The total budget of the study is Tk 25.30cr for a year.
Secretary of Power Division Dr Sultan Ahmed and BPDB Chairman (Additional) Md Zahurul Haque spoke at the ceremony, among others.
Earlier, BPDB successfully buried power lines in the Dargah Gate area of Sylhet and removed all overhead cables and electric poles. The installation work of overhead lines is ongoing to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply.
The state-owned Dhaka Power Distribution Company and Dhaka Electric Supply Company have undertaken a project to bury Dhanmondi and Gulshan's overhead power cables.
