Timely election essential to overcome nation’s challenges: Fakhrul
The BNP leader said interim govt done lot in three months
Bangladesh's current challenges could be addressed if the interim government holds elections at an appropriate time, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.
"If we all extend our support to the government and they succeed in conducting a rational election at the right time, then the nation will be able to face the challenges ahead," he said after paying respects to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka, marking the occasion of "National Revolution and Solidarity Day".
Responding to journalists' queries on the interim government's actions three months into its tenure, he said significant steps have been taken. "Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely - they have accomplished a lot."
Recalling the significance of 7 November, the BNP leader said that for the second time soldiers and citizens united to defeat imperialism and their allies on this day in 1975.
"Those who sought to undermine the country's independence and sovereignty were overpowered, and Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the declarer of Bangladesh's independence in 1971, emerged as the leader, ushering in a new era of nationalism," he added.
Fakhrul said the BNP is committed to oppose imperialist forces in Bangladesh, saying, "We have taken an oath to resist these imperialist forces with the support of students and citizens."
He criticised the "fascist" actions of the previous Awami League government, accusing it of systematic repression.
"The Awami League government has harassed nearly six million people with false cases, enforced disappearances, and widespread killings to establish fascism," he asserted.
