Ishraque’s personal secretary remanded
The court also rejected the bail petition filed by Ariful’s lawyers
A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed Ariful Islam, the personal secretary of BNP's mayoral candidate for Dhaka city election Ishraque Hossain, on a one-day remand in a case filed under the Firearms Act.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Millat Hossain passed the remand order when police produced Ariful before the court with a seven-day remand plea.
The court also rejected the bail petition filed by Ariful's lawyers. Ariful is a former student leader.
Police on January 30 arrested Ariful from Mohanagar Project area in Hatirjheel on allegation of opening gunfire during a clash between Awami League and BNP supporters in the capital's Gopibagh area.
Police also seized a pistol and 50 bullets from his possession. Later on that day, the DB police filed the case against Ariful Islam.
On January 26, several people including a journalist were injured as Awami League and BNP supporters locked into a clash in the capital during electioneering of Ishraque Hossain in Dhaka South City Corporation election.
The two groups locked into a chase and counter-chase during the clash and vehicles were vandalised. Ariful allegedly opened fire during the clash.
