Kaus Miah will be presented with the crest and special certificate at a ceremony on 5 March
Haji Kaus Miah, a jorda (processed tobacco leaves) businessman from Old Dhaka, has been selected as the best taxpayer on the occasion of Mujib Year (17 March 2020 to 16 December 16 2021).
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is giving this award as a special honour on the occasion of Mujib Year as he has been the top taxpayer at the individual level for a long time.
The Revenue Board issued a notification in this regard on Sunday that reads only one person is receiving this honour.
Kaus Miah will be presented with the crest and special certificate at a ceremony on 5 March, NBR officials said.
Kaus first paid tax in 1958 and in 61 years, he has been awarded the state award 18 times in a row as the highest income tax payer including the first place in the country eight times.
He has been on the list of top taxpayers in the country since 2008. He was also the number one taxpayer in the then East Pakistan in 1966.
According to NBR sources, Kaus pays Tk43-45 crore in taxes every year. He is the top taxpayer in the country in the individual category from 2013-14 to 2018-19.
"I used to keep money here and there, which was risky. I paid tax for the first time in 1958 and I became 'carefree'. Then I started keeping all the money in the bank and brought transparency in my accounts," Kaus Miah said at an NBR event in 2019.
He told an international media outlet his total assets now amount to about Tk10,000 crore, including various businesses and land. He is currently involved in 40-45 types of business.
His main business is selling tobacco. He buys tobacco in Rangpur and sold it there.
