7 out of 8 accused of Regent Hospital put on remand

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate's Court has granted remand for seven of the eight arrested accused for five days, including the manager of the Regent Hospital for making false coronavirus test reports and extorting large sums of money from Covid patients.

The other accused is a minor.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury granted the remand after a hearing on Wednesday.

However, they were not taken to court during the remand hearing to prevent coronavirus infection. They were produced at court a few hours earlier. 

The Uttara and Mirpur branches of the Regent Hospital were shut down on Tuesday due to various irregularities including giving false reports without testing.
The health department directed the shutdown of the branches of the Regent Hospital in a notification issued on Tuesday evening.

RAB filed a case in Uttara West Police Station against 17 people, naming the Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed as the main accused.

Eight of them have been arrested. Nine people, including the Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed, were declared fugitives in the case.

The accused in the case are: Regent Hospital Chairman Md Shahed (43), Managing Director Masud Parvez (40), Admin Ahsan Habib (45),  X-ray Technician Hasan (49), Medical Technologist Hakim Ali (25), Receptionist Kamrul Islam ( 35), Regent Group Project Admin Rakibul Islam (39), Regent Group HR Admin Amit Anik (33), Driver Abdus Salam (25), Executive Officer Abdur Rashid Khan Jewel (26), Hospital Employee Tariqul Islam (33), Staff Abdur Rashid Khan (29), staff member Shimul Parvez (25), employees Dipayan Basu (32) and Mahbub (38). The names of two other accused were not known.
