At least 700 detained in 48 cases filed countrywide

Police in countrywide drives detained at least 700 suspects in 48 cases filed in districts on charges of violence, sabotage and destruction of state properties centring the last few days' protests.

Some detainees are the leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, said police officers involved in the nationwide drives.

The cases were filed in Savar of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Brahmanbaria, Kushtia, Cumilla, Barishal, Rajshahi, Bogura, Cox's Bazar and Tangail districts, they added.

"In Savar and Ashulia, police filed seven cases over sabotage, arson and vandalism. In the last two days, more than 100 people were detained," Abdullahil Kafi, additional superintendent of police (crime, ops and traffic) of Dhaka district, told TBS.

"In separate drives, police detained 121 people from Rajshahi city and across the district," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Zamirul Islam of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.

"Most of the detainees here are pro-BNP-Jamaat men," said Additional SP Rafikul Islam.

Meanwhile, police detained 120 suspects in Narayanganj in the cases filed over violence.

Besides, in Brahmanbaria, eight people were detained in three cases filed with Sarail and Ashugnaj police stations against innumerous unidentified people, said Additional Police Commissioner (Crime) Md Sunahor Ali in the district.

In Kushtia, four cases were filed on the allegation of attacks on police, torching bikes, sabotage, and vandalism.  48 detainees here were sent to jail.  Most of the detainees are pro-BNP and Jamaat men, said Additional SP (Crime) Palash Kanti Nath.                                                                                               

In Tangail, 104 people were arrested as of today in eight cases filed with four police stations, said Additional SP (DSB) Abdullah Al Mamun of the district.

Moreover, police detained 91 in Cumilla, 33 in Barishal, 63 in Bogura and 13 in Cox's Bazar in 20 cases filed in these districts.

Cumilla's Additional SP Najmul Hasan said most of the detainees here are BNP-Jamaat leaders and activists.
