Students of Kharulia Talimul Quran Dakhil Madrasah in Cox's Bazar Sadar blocked the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar Highway today (8 October), demanding the resignation of the institution's superintendent over allegations of corruption and irregularities.
The blockade, which started at around 10am near the Kharulia area of Jhilongjha union, caused a five-kilometre-long traffic jam from Kharulia to Banglabazar station for over two and a half hours.
As hundreds of vehicles were left stuck on both sides of the highway, many of the commuters and tourists caught in the gridlock opted to walk to their destinations.
Police and other officials concerned were at the scene and trying to restore normalcy.
Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nilufa Yasmin Chowdhury, who visited the site, said, "We are talking to the protesting students to remove the blockade. We will take appropriate action after discussing their demands with the concerned authorities."
The students alleged that the madrasah's superintendent, Abdullah Al-Amin, has been involved in corruption and mismanagement for a long time, putting the institution on the brink of collapse.
As of 1pm, the students were continuing their demonstration, keeping the highway blocked.
