‘Making Sense of Big Data’ seminar held at Bangladesh University
The seminar ended with the signing of an MoU which agrees to provide grants up to Tk.10 lakh to 10 startup companies
Startup Accelerator of Bangladesh University (BU) hosted a seminar on Making Sense of Big Data on January 30 at the university's permanent campus in the capital's Adabar.
State Minister for ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak attended the seminar as chief guest, while Quazi Jamil Azher, Chairman of board of trustees at BU, chaired the program. The keynote speech was presented by Abdul Bari from Queen's Land University of Australia. CEO of Light Castle Partners Mr. Bijon Islam was present as the guest speaker among others.
High officials of different departments and companies, alongside students, attended the seminar. The programme was moderated by Tina F Jabeen, Executive Advisor of Startup Accelerator.

Palak, while speaking at the seminar, introduced the prospect of earning 5 billion US dollars by 2023 from ICT sector and creating job opportunities for one million people.
Emphasizing the importance of acquiring the capacity of processing, analysing and usage of data, he said, "A nation with big data is considered more powerful. ICT is becoming the main tool for building Bangladesh's future and by utilizing such technology, Bangladesh will achieve success."
Palak concluded his speech by announcing a data analysis lab at BU will be set up, which will be accessible to not only the students and faculty members but researchers from other universities can use it as well.
Abdul Bari, while presenting the keynote speech, spoke about data, big data, data science, data process, data analysis and how data scientists use data to transform the world's future.
Bijon Islam cited online platforms such as Shohoz, Pathao and bKash as examples and drew attention to how these companies changed the startup scenario of Bangladesh.
The seminar ended with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between BU and Innovation Design and Entrepreneurship Academy (iDEA) under the ICT Division. Both parties agreed to mutually assist each other through the exchange of information and expert advice. Under the MoU, iDEA agreed to provide grants up to Tk.10 lakh to 10 startup companies.
