Man attacked over alleged extortion demand, video goes viral
The victim is Md Ehtesham, a local businessman and the joint general secretary of the Elephant Road Computer Society
A video showing a man being attacked by unidentified assailants at Elephant Road area in Dhaka went viral on social media following the incident on Friday night.
The 11-second footage, recorded near Multiplan Centre, shows a group of young men in face masks brutally attacking the victim with machetes and cleavers.
"An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the attack, with a focus on personal and business disputes, as well as extortion," said Tarek Latif, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
The victim is Md Ehtesham, a local businessman and the joint general secretary of the Elephant Road Computer Society, according to police and local sources.
Wahidul Hasan Dipu, president of the Society, was also injured during the incident. However, as he was inside his vehicle, and only suffered a foot injury.
The attackers initially targeted Dipu's car as he was leaving the market, according to the sources.
After attempting to break the vehicle, they shifted their focus to Ehtesham, dragging him out and hacking him on the road. Ehtesham is now receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Dipu told The Business Standard that the attack was the result of a long-standing extortion dispute.
Dipu said he was in the process of filing a case over the incident.
