Man gets life sentence for rape, murder of garment worker in launch cabin
A Barishal court today (7 October) sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a female garment worker in a Dhaka-Barisal launch cabin.
The convict, Sumon Sipai, 30, was also fined Tk2 lakh.
Barisal Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Yarab Hossain passed the order this afternoon, prosecution lawyer Advocate Umme Asma Sheli told The Business Standard.
Advocate Sheli said the garment worker was going to her home in Barisal on Surovi-8 launch from Dhaka on 19 July 2019.
"As no cabin was available, the convict Sumon managed a staff cabin for her to stay. Later that night, he went to the woman's cabin and raped her. As she screamed, Suman strangled her to death and ran away," the lawyer said.
Later, the father of the deceased filed a case against unidentified persons in the court. Police submitted the chargesheet in the case accusing Sumon Sipai. The court passed the verdict today after taking testimonies from 22 people.
