DC, SP arguments with EC a misunderstanding: CEC
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Tuesday said the incident between the deputy commissioners and superintendents of police at the Election Commission office on Saturday was just "a misunderstanding".
"It was perhaps a small misunderstanding. There is no reason to worry about it. So I don't want to comment on the matter," the CEC told the media.
In the meeting with the DCs and SPs of 61 districts on Saturday, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman raised the issue of their partial behaviour. He called them "toothless and clawless", saying they cannot function without the support of ministers and MPs.
Anisur Rahman was then forced to cut his speech short in the face of protests from the DCs and SPs.
Habibul Awal said much had already been discussed on the issue and he did not want to spend more time on it.
EC Anisur was absent from a press conference on Monday, though all other ECs along with the CEC were present. He was also absent from the press conference held yesterday.
In his reaction to the incident, EC Alamgir said there is no scope for deterioration of relations with the DCs and SPs.
Another EC, Rashida Sultana, said she was embarrassed by the incident.
On the government decision to transfer the NID registration service to the Security Service Division under the home ministry, Habibul Awal said the issue was not their affair but the decision of the state, government and parliament.
"We will only focus on the elections. We will see the accuracy of the voter list and whether people can vote on EVM," he said.
