New cargo vehicle terminal opens at Benapole port
The terminal is expected to ease congestion and boost trade
The new cargo vehicle terminal was inaugurated at Benapole port today (14 November).
Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain inaugurated the newly constructed cargo vehicle terminal around noon and inspected the port operations, said project director Hasan Ali.
Speaking at the opening event, Sakhawat Hossain said trucks carrying Indian imports will be stationed in this cargo yard, alongside Bangladeshi trucks loaded with export goods bound for India.
"The facility will also accommodate truck drivers from both countries. All trucks will be weighed upon entry and exit, leaving no room for evasion," he added.
Regarding the sufferings of passengers using the port, Sakhawat said, "We are developing a comprehensive master plan. Passengers will no longer have to wait outside in uncomfortable conditions. A spacious passenger terminal, covering one kilometre, will be constructed with full facilities, including seating and dining areas."
The adviser instructed staff to stop any form of passenger harassment at the check post.
Later, he held a meeting with land port officials, employees, and port users at the auditorium.
With the opening of the new cargo terminal, which can accommodate 1,200 to 1,500 trucks, long-standing issues of congestion and delays are expected to be significantly reduced.
Port authorities expressed hope that this facility will enhance border trade and increase revenue.
