Next elections may be held in mid-2026: Shipping adviser
The discussants talked about the political condition, human rights and future of Bangladesh before and after 5 August
Shipping, Labour and Employment Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain has said the next general elections might be held in the middle of 2026 after necessary reforms are completed.
The adviser made the comment in reply to journalists after attending a conference organised by human rights organisation "Voice for Bangladesh" at House of Lords in the British Parliament on Tuesday (19 November).
The conference, titled "Discussion on Democratic Collapse and Rebuilding of Bangladesh", was presided over by senior member of House of Lords Alexander Charles Carlyle Qusee and moderated by Founder of Voice for Bangladesh and Broadcaster Ataullah Faruk.
M Sakhawat attended the event as chief guest.
The discussants talked about the political condition, human rights and future of Bangladesh before and after 5 August.
During the event, Faruk thanked House of Lords members for standing beside anti-fascism forces in Bangladesh during the last 15 years.
At the conference, Bangladeshi-origin Labour MP Rupa Huq urged Bangladesh government to keep garments export normal, while British Minister Paul Scaly said justice has to be served to those who had violated human rights in Bangladesh in the preceding years.
In his speech, Lord Hossain said Bangladesh will receive necessary help from the UK for reform and a proper election.
Former chief for Amnesty International's South Asia unit Abbas Foyez called for banning Bangladesh Chaatra League for being a terrorist organisation.
Many human rights lawyers, politicians and journalists attended the conference.
