Next population census to include foreign nationals
Data will be collected for the first time in multimode – using mobile app, web app, pick and drop and paper-based call centre for the population and housing census 2021
Planning Minister MA Mannan today said for the first time foreign nationals and Bangladeshis living abroad will be counted in the upcoming population and housing census.
The minister said this at a discussion on the population and housing census 2021 held at Chattogram Circuit House.
In addition, data will be collected for the first time in multimode – using mobile app, web app, pick and drop, paper-based call centre and so on. An e-census will be carried out on a limited scale, he added.
Speaking on Rohingyas, the minister said, "They have come here crossing mountains and the sea. They are our guests. So we cannot be rude to them."
The census will take place from January 2-8 in 2021.
The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) approved the project titled "Population and Housing Census 2021" at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council in October last year.
The cost of the project will be Tk1,761.79 crore – Tk1,578.68 crore will come from the government funds while Tk183.11crore from foreign sources.
Sourendra Nath Chakraborty, secretary of the statistics and information management department; Shankar Ranjan Saha, additional divisional commissioner of Chattogram; and Hefjur Rahman, divisional statistics officer, among others attended the meeting.
