No decision yet on banning any party: CA press wing
President’s fate will be decided based on consensus with political parties, it reiterates
The Press Wing of the interim government's chief adviser has said no decision has been made to ban any political party other than the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the Awami League, at this time.
"The government will make decisions regarding the removal of the President based on consensus through discussions with all political parties," said Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder during a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital today (28 October).
Earlier in the day, a writ petition was filed at the High Court, requesting an order to bar 11 political parties, including the Awami League, from conducting political activities nationwide.
Three people including Anti-Discrimination Student Movement leader Sarjis Alam filed the writ petition.
When asked whether the government supports the issue, Majumder said that since the matter is sub-judice, they will not comment on it.
On the removal of the president, he said, "We expect that a decision will be taken based on a consensus. Once the decision is taken, you will know about it."
Azad said the Council of Advisers is also discussing the issue and there are efforts to reach a political consensus through discussions with all the political stakeholders and those involved in the students-led mass uprising.
Earlier on Thursday, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan also told the media that the Advisory Council has decided that the fate of President Mohammed Shahabuddin – whether he will remain in office or be removed – will be determined after discussions with various political parties.
