No Indian visa ban imposed on student leaders: Official says debunking media reports
No Bangladeshi student leader has been banned from getting Indian visas by the Ministry of External Affairs, an Indian official said debunking media reports.
"It is fake news and no such ban has been imposed [by India]," the official in Bangladesh told The Business Standard today (1 September) on condition of anonymity when contacted.
Several media outlets, citing The Mirror Asia, reported that India has imposed a visa ban on six Bangladeshi student leaders and their relatives, citing unnamed sources.
The reports claimed that the decision was taken on allegations of inciting anti-India mobs and engaging in activities which went against India's national interest.
The reports further claimed instructions were sent to the Indian High Commission in Dhaka in this regard and that several Indian journalists working in Delhi confirmed this to The Mirror Asia.
According to the report, the list included former vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) Nurul Haque Nur, Akhtar Hossain, convenor of Gonotantrik Chhatra Shakti, the newly appointed special assistant to the chief adviser Mahfuz Alam, coordinators of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam and Nusrat Tabassum.
