422 of 875 martyrs in July-August uprising belonged to BNP, claims Fakhrul
He also said the movement didn't suddenly emerge, rather it was part of BNP's long-standing struggle
In the 2024 uprising, 422 of the 875 martyrs in the July-August protests were affiliated with BNP said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
"There is no room to undermine BNP's contribution here," he said today (15 September) during a press conference held at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan.
"The July-August movement didn't suddenly emerge, rather it was part of BNP's long-standing struggle," he said.
"The aim during this time was not to claim credit for the movement, but to ensure the downfall of dictatorship," he added.
The BNP secretary general further said, "In fact, in the 2024 uprising, BNP has lost 422 martyrs and in 2023, the number of martyrs was 1,551."
He also said there have been 423 enforced disappearances (with the total number across all political parties and ordinary people being around 700), 6 lakh accused individuals, and 150,000 cases filed.
"These figures are not just statistics of BNP's sacrifices, but they reflect the party's unwavering struggle and contribution towards Bangladesh's second liberation," he added.
BNP Standing Committee members, including Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, and Salauddin Ahmed were also present at the press conference.
