BNP expresses concern over Urea fertiliser price hike
Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed deep concern over the government increasing the price of Urea fertiliser by Tk6 per kg.
In a meeting of the National Standing Committee held on 1 August and chaired by Acting Chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman the party said that on the one hand irrigation will be disrupted as a result of load-shedding and on the other hand as the price of Urea fertiliser will increase by Tk300 per bag, agricultural production will be severely affected.
Farmers will suffer and food security will become uncertain. In the meeting, the party demanded restoring the previous price of Urea fertiliser immediately.
The party also expressed anger and disgust at the on 31 July attack by the police on a "peaceful" rally of the party in Bhola in protest of unbearable load-shedding and mismanagement of fuel which killed a Swechasebak League member and injured almost 400 party members.
The party expressed deep condolence for the family members of deceased Swechasebak League Abdur Rahim during a meeting.
Decision was also taken to take necessary measures for the proper treatment of the injured.
It is the constitutional right of political parties to hold rallies and marches. The police violated the Constitution and killed people in a serious violation of human rights during peaceful gatherings, reads a press release.
The party also protested the filing of false cases against 400 leaders and activists including Bhola district BNP president following the rally.
The opposition party criticised the government's handling of the situation and urged all country-loving and democracy-loving people and all political parties to be united in defeating the "unelected, authoritarian fascist government" through mass movement and establishing a people's government.
