Resign and hold fair elections if you have courage: Dr Moyeen says to govt
BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan said the government should resign and hold fair elections under a caretaker government.
"If you have the courage, resign and conduct fair elections under a nonpartisan government," he said today (16 December) during a brief rally in front of the party's Nayapaltan central office before its Victory Procession.
"52 years ago, we achieved independence for Bangladesh through the Liberation War on 16 December. But the government has turned this Victory Day into a day of defeat by murdering democracy, which was our primary mantra during the Liberation War.
"Today, there's no democracy or economic freedom in the country," he added.
He added, "If the government has true courage, it should resign and hold elections under a nonpartisan caretaker government, as our leader Khaleda Zia declared in 1996 for the sake of elections.
Earlier today, BNP leaders and activists gathered in front of the party's central office in Nayapaltan to take part in a procession marking the Victory Day.
The event was organised by the BNP's North and South units was scheduled for 1pm, but it was delayed and began at 1:30pm.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) gave permission to the BNP, verbally, to hold the procession.
Around 11:00am this morning, party leaders and activists, particularly those from Dhaka and its surrounding districts, started gathering in large numbers to participate in the programme.
Additional police personnel were deployed in the area to avert any untoward incident.
At a virtual press conference on Friday (15 December), BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, "The victory rally will commence in front of the BNP's central office at Nayapaltan at 1:00 pm, concluding at Moghbazar. It will be organised by the BNP's Dhaka North-South units."
Rizvi also urged all BNP leaders and activists, as well as affiliated organisations, to ensure the success of the programme.
