BNP, allies to hold rallies countrywide on Friday
BNP’s Dhaka south and north city units and other parties and alliances will separately take out mass processions in the capital tomorrow after Jummah prayers
The BNP and like-minded parties will hold rallies in all major cities including Dhaka today, demanding the government's resignation and the release of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Amid the opposition's ongoing movement to release Khaleda Zia, the Doctors Association of Bangladesh yesterday called for immediately sending the ailing BNP chairperson abroad for advanced treatment.
The BNP will organise two mass processions in Dhaka on Friday, said sources in the party.
The rally organised by the Dhaka North unit of the BNP will start at 3pm from Gulshan-2 and will end at Mohakhali bus stand after marching through Gulshan-1 and Titumir College areas.
The Dhaka South unit of the BNP will start a rally in the capital's Dayaganj area. The procession will pass through Sayedabad Bridge, Dhalpur Community Centre, Golapbagh, Kamalapur, Khilgaon, Shajahanpur, Fakirapool before stopping in front of the BNP's central office in Naya Paltan.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will participate in the Dhaka South unit rally while BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas will lead the rally of the party's Dhaka North unit.
The BNP's allies will also hold rallies in the capital, demanding the government's resignation.
Ganatantra Mancha, an alliance of six opposition parties supporting the BNP, will bring out a procession from the Press Club area at 4:20pm today, while the 12-party alliance will start a rally from Vijay Nagar area at 4pm. The Jatiyatabadi Sammana Jot will bring out a procession from Alraji Complex in Purana Paltan area at 4pm.
The LDP will hold a rally at 3pm in Karwan Bazar, the Gano Forum and the People's Party from the Notre Dame College area at 4pm.
The Jatiyatabadi Ganatantrik Andolan will start a rally from Malibagh intersection at 5:30pm. The Labour Party will bring out a procession from its office in Naya Paltan at 3pm.
The Gana Adhikar Parishad (Dr Reza Kibria-Faruk Hasan) will organise a programme at Rampura Bridge at 10am.
The Ganatantrik Bam Oikya will bring out a procession from the Segunbagicha area at 10am, which will reach the Press Club area via Paltan intersection. The Bangladesh Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Songrokkhon Parishad will start a rally from Shahbagh intersection at 4pm, and the Somomona Ganatantrik Peshajibi Jot will bring out a procession from the Press Club area at 10am.
Amar Bangladesh Party will hold a protest rally opposite to Hotel 71 in Bijoynagar area at 11am demanding the government's resignation.
Meanwhile, the Doctors Association of Bangladesh, a group of pro-BNP physicians, yesterday called on authorities concerned to immediately send BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia abroad for better treatment.
"The equipment needed for her treatment is not available in the country," said the Doctors Association of Bangladesh yesterday in a statement signed by its President Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid and Secretary General Dr Md Abdul Salam.
"Therefore, we call upon the government to give Khaleda Zia the opportunity to seek treatment abroad as soon as possible, considering the humanitarian aspect. Otherwise the government will be responsible if anything happens to Khaleda Zia," said the Doctors Association of Bangladesh.
Khaleda Zia is currently undergoing treatment in the coronary care unit of Evercare Hospital in the capital.
