Certain groups deliberately undermining press freedom: Fakhrul
"Attacks on the press and freedom of expression, for which we have always fought, are increasing. After Begum Khaleda Zia came to power in 2001, she championed press freedom. Today, however, certain groups are deliberately undermining it,” he said.
Certain groups are deliberately undermining press freedom in Bangladesh, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today (26 November), condemning the growing "attacks against media outlets".
"Attacks on the press and freedom of expression, for which we have always fought, are increasing. After Begum Khaleda Zia came to power in 2001, she championed press freedom. Today, however, certain groups are deliberately undermining it," he said.
Speaking at a publication ceremony of the book "Tarique Rahman: Politics and Policies Contemporary Bangladesh" at Hotel Lakeshore in the capital, he called on all parties involved to refrain from actions that threaten press freedom and collaborate in strengthening democracy.
Warning against destabilisation
The BNP leader also said the former autocratic regime is attempting to destabilise the nation. "Looking at the current state of the country, many are feeling anxious. What is happening?"
Mirza Fakhrul highlighted the ongoing challenges, urging people to stay alert.
"Our enemies, who retreated temporarily, are now working from the shadows to create instability. We must remain cautious. Unfortunately, our nation lacks a culture of tolerance. Patience is critical at this time," he said.
He further said, "This interim government must cooperate with us. If it fails, the country risks falling back into darkness. The revolution will fail, and we will return to instability. We must think positively and work towards reforms and stability."
Call for reforms and elections
Addressing the youth and students, Fakhrul emphasised the need for immediate reforms, noting that BNP does not oppose to change.
"Tarique Rahman himself has called for reforms. We cannot go to elections without implementing necessary changes. Elections are vital to addressing challenges and resolving the country's problems. Only an elected government, with the people's mandate, can effectively bring stability," he asserted.
Fakhrul concluded by reiterating the importance of a unified effort to achieve meaningful reforms and ensure a democratic future.
