Fakhrul's bail hearing in nine cases tomorrow

A Dhaka court has set the bail hearing for BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for Wednesday in nine separate cases related to clashes during the party's rally on 28 October last year.

The court earlier accepted the plea to show his arrest in the cases with Paltan and Ramna model police stations.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sultan Sohag Uddin passed the order after hearing a plea from Fakhrul's lawyer. Fakhrul was brought from jail to the court.

Defence lawyer Syed Joynul Abedin told the media that previously, the court set the hearing for Wednesday but later rescheduled it to Wednesday.

Earlier on 13 December, defence lawyers filed bail applications in nine cases where Fakhrul wasn't shown arrested. The court advised taking the matter to the High Court in this regard.

Later, Fakhrul filed a writ in the HC challenging the validity of the non-acceptance of bail applications.

On December 18, the HC directed the lower court to hear the bail pleas.

Then, on 31 December, a Dhaka court set 9 January for hearing Fakhrul's bail petitions in the nine cases.

On 29 October, police detained Fakhrul from his Gulshan residence after deadly clashes rocked parts of Dhaka the previous day.

Govt playing with people's voting rights: Rizvi

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said the government is playing with people's voting rights.

"The people have boycotted the polls. The government is playing with the voting rights of the people," he said while distributing leaflets near Kamalapur railway yesterday, calling on the people to join BNP's movement.

At that time, Rizvi said common people boycotted the election and thanked them for it.

BNP has called for the cancellation of the 12th national polls, deeming it a "dummy and a farce".

The party has called for movement for two days to press home its demands for cancelling the election.

Opposition parties, including BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, Gana Adhikar Parishad, Ganotontro Monch, 12-Party Alliance, and others, engaged in similar leaflet distribution and communication efforts across the country. They are set to continue these activities on Wednesday also.

Police disperse BNP's leaflet distribution in Jashore

At least 25 BNP leaders and activists in Jashore were reportedly injured after police "charged batons" during their leaflet distribution campaign on Sunday.

The incident occurred as part of a nationwide effort by opposition parties to express gratitude to voters who boycotted the 7 January election.

Professor Nargis Begum, convener of Jashore BNP, said, "Party members were distributing leaflets peacefully when police suddenly charged them with batons."

She further alleged that the police action was unprovoked and they did not spare female party members as well.

Jashore Kotwali police station OC Abdur Razzak denied the use of batons.

However, injured BNP leaders reported receiving first-aid treatment at nearby hospitals.
