Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, has survived more than a dozen attacks after she took the helm of the party in 1981.
She lost most of her family members in another attack on August 15 in 1975 in which the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was brutally murdered and his government was overthrown by a band of disgruntled army officers.
Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana were in abroad during the carnage that shocked the newly independent country.
Most of the attacks on Sheikh Hasina were carried out during the regime of autocrat HM Ershad and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
Here are brief of few attacks-
August 21, 2004: The gravest attempt to assassinate the back then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina was made on August 21, 2004 during the rule of BNP led by Khaleda Zia. Hasina was speaking at a public meeting on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
After she finished her speech with the slogan "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu" around 5:20pm, a grenade exploded two yards from the makeshift stage on the truck she was standing. She narrowly survived the blast.
Immediately, the leaders on the truck made a human shield to protect her as at least 12 more grenades landed in the next two minutes.
Hasina was then immediately escorted to her bulletproof sports utility vehicle (SUV) with her security personnel firing blanks to clear the way, and wheeled away through gunfire and thick smokes.
The assailants fired seven bullets at Hasina's car. A bullet punctured a rear wheel of the vehicle and there was a large hole on the rear right side of its windshield. At least three bullets hit the right side of the front windshield, just opposite the front seat where she sat. The three-layered bulletproof Mercedes Benz saved her life that day.
In 2000: Two bombs weighing 76kg and 84kg were planted at Kotalipara helipad and at the venue of a public meeting in a bid to kill the opposition leader Hasina. She survived as the bombs were detected prior to her arrival during the regime of BNP led by Khaleda Zia.
September 23, 1994: Sheikh Hasina, the back then opposition leader, came under attack when she was travelling from Khulna to Rajshahi by train. She held a nationwide campaign, speaking at rallies at different railway stations.
As her train reached Pakshey Railway Station in Ishwardi upazila of Pabna, it came under attacks of crude bombs and gunshots.
September 11, 1991: Miscreants fired shots when Sheikh Hasina, the opposition leader, was visiting a polling centre in the capital's Kalabagan area during the BNP's rule led by Begum Khaleda Zia.
January 24, 1988: Police opened fire targeting the then opposition leader Sheikh Hasina and charged batons in front of the Chattogram Court building during the regime of president HM Ershad. At least 30 leaders and workers of Awami League were killed in that incident.
Police opened fire on agitating people as they proceeded in a procession to attend a rally on Laldighi Maidan. Hasina's car also came under gunfire while returning from the public meeting.
November 10, 1987: During the Ershad regime, police fired at an Awami League siege programme led by Sheikh Hasina, the then opposition leader, at the Secretariat. An attempt was also made to lift the car carrying Hasina with a crane in front of the National Press Club.
