Press freedom needed to build equity-based society: Minister
Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Friday stressed the need for ensuring freedom of press to build an equity-based society.
The minister came up with the remark while addressing a programme organised by Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) at its auditorium in the capital, marking the Bangladesh Press Council Day.
Dr Hasan underscored the needs for bringing discipline in media due to increase in the number of media outlets and building up knowledge-based society in the country.
"Some people treat social media as mass media but it is not mass media. Many people carry cards of online news portals and introduce themselves as journalists but they are not real journalists," he added.
The minister said the current government has raised the number of television channels from 10 to 40 and newspapers 450 to 1250 in the last 10 years.
