Proper trial of Hasina depends on her repatriation: ICT chief prosecutor
He stated that there is no scope to assess this on his part as it is the duty of the state
If the government succeeds in bringing Sheikh Hasina back from India, it will be possible to conduct her trial in a proper way, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam said today (24 December).
Replying to a question about his assessment on government's diplomatic note to India for Sheikh Hasina's repatriation, the ICT chief prosecutor stated that there is no scope to assess this on his part as it is the duty of the state.
"The state is doing its job and I am also performing my duties for a state organisation. The state has sent a note verbale to the Indian government following our request and trying to bring her back through diplomatic channel. If the government can successfully bring Sheikh Hasina back from India, then it would be possible to conduct her trial in a better way," Tajul said.
Yesterday, Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain told media that Dhaka has sent a note verbale to New Delhi saying that the Bangladesh government wanted Sheikh Hasina back here for judicial process.
According to the home adviser, the former prime minister could be brought back to Bangladesh under the extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India.
The ICT on 17 October issued arrest warrant against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 45 others on charge of crimes against humanity committed during the July-August mass uprising.
