Ratification of ILO convention demanded to stop disparity against women in workplace
Gender-based violence, harassment and torture against women must be stopped as per the ILO Convention 190
The National Women Workers' Trade Union Centre (NWWTUC) has urged the government to ratify and implement the ILO Convention 190 to end violence and harassment against women in workplaces.
They raised the demand from a human chain formed in front of the National Press Club on Tuesday.
At the event, women workers said despite the significant contribution of women to the national politics, economy and socio-economic development of the country, women workers are being subjected to various forms of exploitation, discrimination, and oppression. They do not get fair wages, necessary leave, overtime and day-care benefits.

They said besides, not recognising domestic help as workers and torture, oppression and discrimination against expatriate female workers are still continuing.
Speakers at the human chain said in 2019, at its 108th conference, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) adopted the ILO Convention 190 with an aim to eliminate violence and harassment in the workplace. Gender-based violence, harassment and torture against women must be stopped as per the ILO Convention 190.
They also demanded that domestic workers be brought under the labour law and harassment of women in the workplace be stopped.
Samsunnahar Bhuiyan, member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was present as the chief guest at the human chain presided over by Shahida Parveen, general secretary of National Women Workers Trade Union Centre.
Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan said, "Despite the development of human civilisation through the combined labour and talent of men and women, women are still struggling to achieve labour rights and social status. However, women are moving forward overcoming all obstacles. We have to move on."
Vice President of NWWTUC Mahbubul Alam, Office Secretary Saira Khatun, President of Mohammadpur thana committee Humaira Begum and others also addressed the human chain. The programme was conducted by labour leader Jahanara Begum.
