SC has authority to take action against judges supporting fascist regime: Asif Nazrul
The adviser also announced that the International Criminal Tribunal will be reconstituted within next week
The Supreme Court has the authority to take action against judges who supported the ousted "fascist" government, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said today (9 October).
"Students alleged that many judges opposed the July movement and strengthened the fascist forces. Their role was against the democratic and human rights-seeking people of the country. Therefore, the students have asked for action against these judges," he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with the chief justice and judges of the Appellate Division.
Asif emphasised that the Supreme Court has the power to take measures within the constitutional framework to address the situation.
However, he declined to speculate on what specific actions might be taken.
At the briefing, the adviser also announced that the International Criminal Tribunal will be reconstituted next week.
Noting that the Supreme Court had previously highlighted a shortage of judges regarding appointments to the tribunal, Asif said, "Twenty-three new judges have been appointed to the High Court, and the tribunal will be reconstituted within 2-3 days after the court's vacation ends."
The adviser also praised the recent judge appointments as being the best in 15 years.
When asked about the whereabouts of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the adviser replied that he is focused on the trial of the crimes committed by the previous regime.
He added that if Sheikh Hasina's presence is necessary at any point during the trial, he will take steps to locate her.
