Stop any move to hike launch fare: Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity
“No other country has hiked public transports’ fares amid the pandemic,” said Mozammel
Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (passengers' welfare association) has demanded that the government should stop any move to increase launch fares amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement issued to the media on June 25, Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, the organisation's secretary general, said imposing the fare hike would be a torture on people, who had lost their jobs and were facing a severe financial crisis due to the pandemic.
He said public transports had fallen in a big crisis as bus fares had increased by 60 percent already. The launches were carrying passengers on almost every route without complying with health guidelines of maintaining social distance.
"No other country has hiked public transports' fares amid the pandemic," said Mozammel.
He further said the price of oil had come down in the international market long ago. By reducing the fuel price, it was possible to make profits with the reduced number of passengers, he added.
He also urged the government to reduce the bus fare and stand by the disaster-stricken people.
