Students among 10 sued over lynching teacher in Khagrachhari
About 400-500 unidentified people were also accused in the case
A case has been filed against 10 people, including students, over mob lynching of a teacher in Khagarachhari last week.
Abul Hasnat Muhammad Sohel Rana, a teacher at Khagrachhari Technical School and College, was beaten to death by an angry mob after accusations emerged of him raping a student.
Khagrachari Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman filed the case as the plaintiff yesterday (4 October), the police station's Officer-in-Charge Abdul Baten Mridha told The Business Standard.
The accused are Nimanta Tripura, Tunshu Chakma, Sajib Chakma, Pranoy Chakma, Kosh Chakma, Tintu Chakma, Amlan Tripura, Icon Chakma, Newton Marma and Anil Chakma. Among them, Sajib, Pranoy and Kosh are students of Khagrachhari Technical School and College.
About 400-500 unidentified people were also accused in the case.
According to the case document, teacher Sohel Rana was beaten up after being accused of raping a student. When police arrived at the spot, the unruly mob attacked them too and five policemen, including assistant superintendent of police and OC of Sadar Police Station, were injured.
OC Mridha said efforts are underway to arrest the accused.
Earlier on 1 October, after news of Sohel Rana's death spread, tensions flared in the area, resulting in clashes which left several people injured.
Incidents of vandalism, looting and arson took place in various areas including Mahajan Para and Kalyanpur.
In the wake of the violence, authorities enforced Section 144, restricting public gatherings in the district headquarters and surrounding municipal areas to prevent further clashes. However, it was lifted on the next day.
Meanwhile, Khagrachhari district administration formed a four-member probe committee to investigate the violence following the lynching.
