Students stage demo in Ctg demanding ban on BCL, besiege CMP office
At 4pm, they besieged the CMP office in Dampara area and issued an ultimatum demanding the arrest of the perpetrators within 24 hours
The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Chattogram today (19 October) demanded a ban on the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), labelling it a terrorist organisation for its alleged attacks and violence against students during the protests.
Around 3pm, students gathered at the Chittagong Press Club square. Then at 4pm, they besieged the Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) office in Dampara area and issued an ultimatum demanding the arrest of the perpetrators within 24 hours.
They also demand a ban on other affiliated organisations of the Awami League.
The protest was called in response to a midnight procession by Chhatra League activists in Jamal Khan area yesterday.
Rassel Ahmed, a coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said, "Those who have committed genocide against the students of this country, who have killed and abducted, have no right to politics in this country."
Around 5pm, the students called off their protest after receiving assurances from police that their demands will be addressed.
Additional Commissioner of CMP Masud Ahmed, told The Business Standard, operations were underway to arrest the accused in the cases filed after 5 August.
"Moreover, six people have been detained in connection with yesterday's procession of the Chhatra League. We are reviewing the video footage of the student movement to see if they are involved and if there are any cases against them," he added.
