Students vandalise buses in Dhaka demanding ‘half pass’
Students of Dhaka City College, Dhaka College, Imperial College and Ideal College have vandalised buses near the Science Lab intersection and Elephant road in demand of half bus fare.
Although police dispersed the protestors, they did not detain anyone. Students shattered the front glasses and the windows of around 30 buses and snatched the keys of two buses.
Inspector (investigation) of Dhanmondi police station Mohammad Syful Islam said, the students gathered in groups and started vandalising buses. One group headed to the Science Lab intersection and another to Elephant Road.
He said, they caused the destruction so suddenly, that no one could predict it beforehand. However, no passenger was hurt so far, he added.
According to an eyewitness Ashraful Islam, students of Dhaka City College and Dhaka College were coming from City College and breaking buses on their way to Katabon.
"However, they fled the area as soon as police arrived. I have seen them break six buses", he added.
According to the students, many students who use this bus route every day are not being charged half fare while being treated badly for asking about it.
After the incident, a representative of bus owners association Md Harun, more than 30 buses were vandalized by the students. About Tk50,000-Tk60,000 will be required to repair each bus.
