Tunnel found near Rangpur Sonali Bank raises suspicion
The police are investigating the matter with utmost importance and will arrest those who are connected with it
A tunnel has been discovered from a Sonali Bank branch to Fakhrul Ulum Senior Madrasa at Jaygirhat of Mithapukur in Rangpur.
"There are a road beside the tunnel, a septic tank and then the bank. It had been dug a long ago and the reason could have been for robbery," said Md Zakir Hossain, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Mithapukur Police Station.
"The Madrasa has been closed for the pandemic. Local boys were playing football in the field of the Madrasa when the ball fell into the tunnel and it was discovered," he added.
The police are investigating the matter with utmost importance and will arrest those who are connected with it, he further informed.
The president of the Madrasa, Enamul Haque said, "There is a room in the east of Madarasa where woods are kept. As we have nothing to do with tunnel there, it must had been dug for robbery."
Manager of the Jaygirhat Sonali Bank Branch, Samiul Islam said, "The security has been beefed up after the incident. A General Diary (GD) has been filed with the police station,"
"The police is investigating the matter. Higher authorities have also been informed of the matter," he added.
"It has happened for the first time in this area," said Madhusudan Roy, additional superintendent of police of Rangpur district.
"We are investigating whether it has dug for robbery or something else," he added.
Recent history of using tunnels for bank robbery
In January 2014, Tk 16 crore was looted from the vault of Sonali Bank by digging a tunnel in Kishoreganj.
In March 2014, Tk 32 lakh was looted from Sonali Bank Bagura branch in a similar fashion.
An attempt was made to rob Sonali Bank in Rajshahi in December 2014 by digging tunnel from a nearby house.
