Teen lynched on suspicion of theft in Gazipur

A teenager was killed, and another seriously injured in a mob beating in Gazipur's Tongi, on suspicion of theft, police said.
The deceased was identified as Sabbir Hossain, 18, son of Zakir Hossain from Aliabad village of Brahmanbaria's Nabinagar Upazila. He lived with his family in Tongi's Dattapara Ledu Molla Road area and worked as an auto-rickshaw driver.
The injured person is Mejbah Uddin, 35, son of Mizan Sheikh from Ershadnagar area of Tongi.
"The incident occurred around 11pm yesterday (16 October) near Dattapara's Hawker Intersection area," Tongi East Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kaysar Ahmed told The Business Standard today (17 October).
"Two people were beaten up by a mob on suspicion of theft. One of them has died. Several people have been detained for questioning. A case will be filed if the victim's family lodges a complaint," the OC said.
The station's Sub-Inspector (SI) Sofiul Islam said Sabbir and Mejbah were rescued and taken to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital for primary treatment.
"On the way to the police station, Sabbir's condition worsened, prompting to take him back to the hospital. He was pronounced dead around 1am. His body has since been sent to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for an autopsy," the SI added.
According to the victim's family, Sabbir left home yesterday with his auto-rickshaw around 4pm. Around 10:30pm, he was carrying three passengers on his auto-rickshaw towards Tongi East Police Station from Dattapara Dighirpar.
On the way, near Hawker Intersection, a group of 10-12 unidentified people stopped the auto-rickshaw and the passengers, suspecting them of theft, and started beating Sabbir and another passenger, Mejbah.
