Tk10 per kg rice sale begins in Bogura
Some 2,400 ration cards were allotted for big municipalities and 1,800 for small ones
The government has started selling rice at Tk10 per kg to ultra-poor families today in Bogura as part of its food-friendly programme amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Bogura Food Controller SM Saiful Islam inaugurated the programme in the morning on the Bogura Coronation Institution and College ground.
He said the programme has been launched for 9,600 families in the district. Some 2,400 ration cards were allotted for big municipalities and 1,800 for small ones. For the convenience of the cardholders, dealers will go to the beneficiaries' respective localities for selling rice. Each cardholder can also buy a maximum of 5 kg of flour at Tk18 per kg.
Director General of food in Bogura Md Sarwar Mahmud said 12.5 lakh cardholders of all the city corporations and municipalities across the country will get this facility till next June.
Local representatives claimed that many poor families are being deprived of this facility due to insufficient allocation.
Councillor of Ward 3 in Bogura municipality Tarun Kumar Chakravarty said, "At least 2,000 cards are needed for my ward. But I received less than half of my demand."
Bogura Sadar Upazila food officer Monir Hossain said each of the cardholders will get monthly 20 kg of rice at Tk10 per kg until June.
